For many homeowners, the arrival of winter signals the perfect time to tackle home improvement projects they have been putting off for months. This could be anything from installing new light fixtures, to fixing holes in the walls, to installing a bathtub. If in fact the bathroom is the focus of your home improvement project this winter, there are a few things you'll want to know about bathtub replacement parts, including costs.
First off, lets talk about the various parts you'll need, as it take more to replace an old bathtub than simply a new bathtub. You'll need hardware as well, specifically: drains, faucets, spouts, and caulking. You may also need new pipes and valves, but for this article we'll assume that your pipes are in good shape and do not need replaced.
Replacement Bathtub Drain: There are five different types of bathtub drains; pop ups, plungers, foot locks, roller balls and lift and turns. Each operates its bathtub stopper a little differently, but all five work well, meaning that you can choose whichever model you prefer. According to Lowes.com, a drain can be replaced in about three hours, and will cost you anywhere between $18 and $100, depending on the style and brand you go with. Lowes also provides an easy how to manual for replacing bathtub drains.
Replacement Bathtub Faucets and Spout: The best way to choose the right bathtub faucet and spout is to remove the existing ones, and take them to a home improvement store. There they will be able to match the existing ones to new ones, as well as give you some helpful tips. Like drains, faucets and spouts can be expensive, cheap, or anywhere in between. So rather than going by price, go by brand: Delta and Moen are two really good brands you could go with.
Replacement Bathtub Caulk: While technically not hardware, you'll still need to be prepared to caulk your new bathtub. Caulking of course is the waterproof filler/sealant that fills the gaps between the walls/faucets and the bathtub. Caulking generally costs less than $5 per tube, with a basic gun running you about $15.
Replacement Bathtub Valve: If the shower valve stems or valve body assembly need replaced, your best bet is going to be hiring a plumber. While you can probably figure out how to do it yourself, getting into the valves gets tricky, and unless you want to risk messing things up, consider hiring a pro to tackle this part.
All in all, new hardware for a replacement bathtub will run you an average of $100, depending on the brands and styles you choose. Remember to make sure you have the right parts for your new tub before buying, and if you are a first timer, get online and find some how to guides before beginning.

I can most of my materials at home depot, mostly cost between $10-$200 depending on what you're looking for. I'll be checking out Lowes though, on their website and see if we have one around here nearby.

Yes, we're planning to install a new shower and bathtub in our old bathroom. Planning to go find myself a contractor to help us redesign and redecorate our old bathroom. Anyone know someone over here at Portland? It's fine if it's online though.
